Preview asset thumbnails directly in the asset panel on hover — faster identification in large or visually similar libraries

1. Purpose & Scope

This article documents the Asset Thumbnail on Hover feature shipped in Tiled v52.0.0. When a creator hovers over an asset in the asset panel, a thumbnail preview of that asset is displayed inline without clicking or opening the asset. This reduces identification time when working with large or visually similar asset libraries.

Scope: All Tiled users with Builder access (Editor and above) who work with the asset panel in Builder 2.0.

2. Feature Description

Trigger

Hover over any asset thumbnail in the asset panel in Builder 2.0.

Preview Content

A larger thumbnail renders in a tooltip or inline preview at a size sufficient to distinguish visually similar assets. Image, video still, or file representation are shown.

No-click Required

The preview appears on hover without requiring the creator to click, open, or insert the asset. Moving the cursor away dismisses the preview.

Performance

Thumbnail previews are served from the existing asset library CDN cache. No additional asset load is triggered by the hover event.

3. Use Cases

• Large libraries — hover previews allow visual identification without inserting each asset to inspect it.

• Product showcases — quickly verify which image is the correct product variant before inserting.

• Iterative design — hover previews eliminate the insert-review-undo cycle when comparing candidate assets.

4. QA Validation
