Layer Locking in Builder 2.0
Lock individual layers from the Layers panel to prevent accidental movement or edits in complex layouts
This article documents the Layer Locking feature shipped in Tiled v51.0.0. Individual layers can now be locked from the Layers panel in Builder 2.0, preventing accidental movement or edits to those layers while still allowing the rest of the canvas to be actively edited. Layer Locking is particularly valuable when finalizing intricate Scroll Tile layouts or multi-layer designs where certain structural elements must not shift.
Scope: All Tiled users with Builder 2.0 access (Editor and above) who work with multi-layer microapp layouts.
2. Control Objective
The control objective is to give content creators a reliable mechanism to protect finalized or structural layers from accidental modification during active editing sessions. In complex layouts — particularly those involving Scroll Tiles, nested overlays, and multi-layer backgrounds — an accidental click-drag on a background layer can disrupt the entire layout. Layer Locking prevents this class of accidental edit.
3. Feature Description
|
Lock a Layer |
In the Layers panel, click the lock icon adjacent to the layer name. The layer is immediately locked. A lock indicator appears on the layer row in the Layers panel. |
|
Effect of Locking |
A locked layer cannot be selected by clicking on the canvas. It cannot be moved, resized, or edited. All other layers remain fully editable. |
|
Unlock a Layer |
Click the lock icon again on the locked layer in the Layers panel. The layer returns to a fully editable state. |
|
Visibility |
Locked layers remain visible on the canvas and in the Viewer. Locking a layer does not hide it. |
|
Scope |
Builder 2.0 only. The Layers panel lock control is not available in Builder 1.0. |
4. When to Use Layer Locking
• Finalizing a layout that uses a full-canvas background image or color tile — lock the background to prevent it from being accidentally selected when clicking on foreground tiles.
• Complex Scroll Tile layouts where the scroll container structure is finalized but foreground content is still being edited.
• Multi-layer brand compositions (logo, background, overlay) where the brand elements are approved and should not be modified.
• Collaborative editing sessions where multiple team members are working on different layers simultaneously.
5. QA Validation
