# Page-level Linking
Page-level linking sends someone to a specific place inside a microapp rather than its first screen — a particular page, state, or overlay. There are two kinds, and which one you use depends entirely on who is receiving the link: internal linking for other Tiled users, external linking for everyone else.
### **Which Type Do You Need?**
The two methods are not interchangeable. A link made one way will not work for the other audience.
| **Type** | **When to use it** |
| --- | --- |
| **Internal** | The recipient is a Tiled user with access to the same library the microapp lives in. You copy the URL straight from your browser — no share form involved. |
| **External** | The recipient is not a Tiled user, or does not have access to that library. You generate a share link through the share form with a checkbox enabled. |

| **Heads Up:** Library access is the deciding factor, not simply whether someone has a Tiled account. A colleague with a Tiled login but no access to the library holding the microapp cannot open an internal link — they need an external one. |

### **Internal Page-level Linking**
Inside the viewer, the browser URL updates as you navigate. That URL is the link — there is nothing to generate.
1\. **Click** — a microapp in the Tiled Library to open the Viewer.
2\. **Navigate** — to the page, state, or overlay you want to link to. Watch the URL change as you move.
3\. **Copy** — the URL from the browser address bar.
4\. **Share it** — with another Tiled user who has access to the same library.

| **Pro Tip:** This makes internal linking ideal for quick, in-the-moment reference — pasting a link in Slack so a teammate lands on the exact slide you are discussing, without explaining how to navigate there. |

### **External Page-level Linking**
For anyone outside your library, the link has to come from the share form, and you must tell it to preserve your current position — otherwise the recipient lands on the first page.
1\. **Click** — a microapp in the Tiled Library to open the Viewer.
2\. **Navigate** — to the page, state, or overlay you want the recipient to land on.
3\. **Click** — Share.
4\. **Choose a share method** — — Public, Direct, or SubTag — and fill in whatever that method requires.
5\. **Check** — Link to current microapp page.
6\. **Copy** — the link and send it.
| **Heads Up:** The checkbox is the whole mechanism. Skip it and you get an ordinary share link that opens at the beginning, which is easy to miss because the link itself looks no different. If a recipient reports landing on the wrong page, this is almost always why. |

| **Pro Tip:** Navigate to the target page before opening the share form, not after. The checkbox captures wherever you currently are, so arriving at the form from the wrong page produces a link to the wrong page. |

### **Combining with other share options**
Page-level linking is a property of the link, not a separate share type, so it works alongside the other options in the share form. Since v61.0.1 every entry point opens the same form, which means the same options are available however you got there:
• **Password protection** — a page-level link can still require a password.
• **Email gating** — require an email address before access.
• **Hide loader** — suppress the loading page, available when creating an Embed link.
• **HubSpot form integration** — where configured.
The share method you choose also determines how the recipient appears in your analytics: a Direct link identifies them by name and email, while a Public link generally does not.

### **What You Can Link To**
Page-level linking covers pages, states, and overlays. Builder 2.0 uses more specific names for these structures, so it is worth knowing how the terms line up.
| **Structure** | **What it is** |
| --- | --- |
| **Page** | A top-level screen in the microapp. |
| **Subpage** | A screen nested under a page. Managed in the Pages panel in Builder 2.0. |
| **Overlay** | Content layered over the current screen. Managed in the Overlays menu in Builder 2.0. |
| **Scroll state** | A named position within a scrolling page or scroll container. Supported in both Builder 1.0 and Builder 2.0 — Builder 2.0 adds a dedicated Scroll States panel and keyboard shortcuts. |

| **Using Builder 1.0?** The linking feature works the same in both builders. What differs is the vocabulary and the interface used to build these structures — Builder 2.0’s Pages panel, Overlays menu, and Scroll States panel. Scroll states themselves are not exclusive to Builder 2.0. |

| **Heads Up:** If you need a link to a specific subpage or scroll state rather than a top-level page, test it before sending. Navigate there, generate the link, and open it in a private browser window to confirm it lands where you expect. |

### **Where the Viewer Lands**
Arriving at a page is not always the same as arriving at the top of it. Each page has a Maintain Scroll Position setting that governs scroll behavior on navigation:
| **Setting** | **Behavior** |
| --- | --- |
| **Maintain Scroll Position on** | The page keeps its previous scroll position when a viewer returns to it. |
| **Maintain Scroll Position off** | The page resets to the top every time it is visited. |

| **Pro Tip:** If a page-level link lands somewhere unexpected within a long scrolling page, check that page’s Maintain Scroll Position setting before assuming the link is wrong. |

### **Page-level Links and Analytics**
A page-level link does not change how engagement is recorded. The session is tracked as normal, and the Activity By Page data shows which pages the recipient actually visited — including the one they landed on.

| **Pro Tip:** Pairing page-level links with page-level analytics is a useful combination: send several recipients to different entry points, then compare Activity By Page to see which starting page produced the most engagement with the rest of the microapp. |

### **Common Questions**
| **Question** | **Answer** |
| --- | --- |
| **My recipient landed on the first page instead of the one I sent. Why?** | The Link to current microapp page checkbox was almost certainly not selected. Without it you get a standard share link that opens at the beginning, and the link looks identical either way. Regenerate it with the checkbox checked. |
| **Can I send a copied browser URL to a customer?** | No. A URL copied from the viewer only works for Tiled users with access to that library. External recipients need a link generated through the share form. |
| **My colleague has a Tiled account but the internal link doesn’t work for them.** | An internal link requires access to the library the microapp lives in, not just a Tiled account. Either have them added to that library, or send an external share link instead. |
| **Does page-level linking work with password protection and email gating?** | Yes. Page-level linking is a property of the link rather than a separate share type, so it combines with the other options in the share form. |
| **Can I link to an overlay or a scroll state, not just a page?** | Pages, states, and overlays are all supported. Because these behave differently depending on how the microapp is built, test the link in a private browser window before sending it to confirm it lands where you expect. |
| **Does this work in Builder 1.0?** | Yes. Page-level linking works the same in both builders. Builder 2.0 uses more specific terminology — subpages, overlays, scroll states — and provides dedicated panels for them, but the linking behavior is unchanged. |
| **Does a page-level link affect my analytics?** | No. The session is recorded normally, and Activity By Page still shows every page the recipient visited, including their entry point. |
